Just listened to the hour with Gene Lacroix…. Very interesting and since I knew the horses he was talking about and have admired Gene’s skill as a horsemen since he was about 16 years old…. It was a fascinating hour.
Boy did I enjoy that!! I was showing arabians back in the 70’s. I always admired him so much. Thanks for that great interview. I wish Gene much continued success. The arabian horse world would not be what it is today without him.
One of my fondest memories of Gene was in the 70s at the Scottsdale show when it was still being held at Paradise Park and I was in my teens. After competing in the Native Costume class, I had to see the Park class -Gene was riding *Ibn Pro and Ray was riding Cognac on Sunday afternoon.
As I watched from our trainer’s box seat, Ray rode past and Cognac threw a big clod of dirt off his hoof right in my face in one big packed chunk. Gene saw it and smiled and said “Sorry!”… even as quick as those two would move in the arena, he had time to do that.
At the end of the class, I noticed Gene walked near some of the other box seats, speaking to a group of people. He motioned to them he’d be back in a minute. He came over and asked if I was ok, and dusted my cheek off.
Of course I was ok and of course he already knew that but it was just one of the light moments Gene would always bring even to the little guys and girls like me.
Back in the day, Gene was an icon at the show ring. He was really the first real celebrity we had. 30+ years later I still remember his kindness and his humor. Thanks Gene!
Extremely interesting to hear from Gene. Great Guy and one great trainer/rider/breeder.
I had seen Gene ride and show many many years ago when he and his family had come to shows in Washington State and my first look at Bask wow what a horse! I was young and very impressed. Ive always admired Gene for what he did for the Arabian breed and should be commended for all he’s done Thanks Gene for such a interesting interview I enjoyed it greatly
